Hanging on for Dear Life

"Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded," declares the Lord. "They will return from the land of the enemy. So there is hope for your descendants," declares the Lord. "Your children will return to their own land." Jeremiah 31:16-17 NIV

Overview

Your young adult has decided that the foundational life principles you taught and modeled during years of careful childrearing no longer make sense to him or her. In response, you have discussed and debated, sought to persuade and encourage, pointed out possible dangers, and perhaps even said things you wish you hadn’t said – all in an effort to change your young adult’s mind. But none of it has worked. In fact, it has become increasingly clear that your young adult has effectively “tuned you out.” It is a heartbreaking enigma.

What can you do? In the natural, probably not a lot. But that doesn’t mean all hope is lost. If you’re a Christian, the great news is that Jesus Christ, because He is God, has the unparalleled ability to reach your child when you cannot. The Lord is also able to help you navigate this painful season – and to do so in a way that preserves your sanity and your ability to enjoy your life. Even if you were not a Christian when you raised your children, you can ask the Lord Jesus to come into your heart and be your Savior. He will do so right now, wherever you are, you don’t have to be in church. But whether you have just asked Jesus into your heart or have been a Christian for many years, this will be key: stay close to the Lord through intimate conversation (prayer) and through meditation on and obedience to His Word (the Holy Bible). As you do so, you will find that little by little, you are safely navigating through this difficult period in the life of your family. Jesus Christ is the Savior, Deliverer, Healer, and Restorer of people and relationships–and He is for you, your young adult, and your family. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain by trusting Him.
